Environmental Crisis in the Indian Himalayan States

Environmental Crisis in the Indian Himalayan States

The Himalayas consist of one of the most complex and fragile ecologies in the world. Many perennial rivers such as the Ganges originate here. The glaciers, the picturesque mountains, and the people of the Himalayan region, together, form one of the most beautiful and vibrant regions with many stories and cultural landscapes. Stories and songs that abound in this region speak about the sinking towns, retreat and melting of the glaciers, and paradise lost. It is in these collective narratives which resides a deep awareness of the micro, as well as the macro factors, such as local ecological degradation and the climate crisis imposed on communities by climate change. “The Environmental Crisis in the Himalayas” is the first of the film from the planned series of films. We have documented the environmental crisis in the Koksar Tehsil of the Lahaul & Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh.
